Poll finds 70% current, former MBTA riders report feeling unsafe

A majority of current or former MBTA riders have felt unsafe riding the system at least once or twice because of the condition of the agency’s infrastructure, according to a poll released Wednesday.The finding comes from a MassINC Polling Group survey of 1,000 residents from the 175 communities served by MBTA. It was conducted in mid-August, before the transit agency announced shutdowns on the Red Line and a pair of safety reports were released last week.Riders who felt unsafe on the MBTA gave each service provided by the agency a lower rating, “a sign that concerns about safety are an important part of overall impressions of the system,” the MassINC Polling Group said in a statement.Another 45% of current and former riders believe the MBTA will improve in 10 years, nearly as many think it will be about the same, and 16% said the system will be worse, according to the poll.“Again, safety appears to be a factor. Escaped prisoner Danelo Cavalcante has been captured Wednesday morning after a manhunt that stretched nearly two weeks.Cavalcante, 34, was captured at 8:15 a.m. within the search perimeter in South Coventry Township, northern Chester County, near French Creek Elementary School. That’s the area where police have been searching since Monday evening.Cavalcante has been taken to the state police barracks at Avondale. NATO member Romania confirms third drone fragments findings near its border with Ukraine

BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) — NATO member Romania found new fragments of a drone deemed similar to those used by the Russian army near its border with war-torn Ukraine on Wednesday, in the third such finding in a week, defense officials said.Two helicopters from the Romanian Air Force were deployed with specialist teams to Nufaru and Victoria in the eastern county of Tulcea where the fragments were spread over an area of “several tens of meters,” the Ministry of National Defense said in a statement.It said in a separate statement that it has notified the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations about areas near the border that could be at risk of incidents as Russian forces attack Ukraine’s Danube River ports across the river from Romania. After years of discussions, there finally appears to be relief on the way for TTC passengers who connect with GO Transit trains and buses as the Ontario government is set to introduce discounted fares.Todd McCarthy, the MPP for Durham who was named Ontario’s associate transportation minister during a cabinet shuffle earlier in September, confirmed planning is underway to bring in a new TTC and GO Transit co-fare policy sometime in February.“This will save the average individual commuter about $1,500 per year.
