Bastrop County food pantry in need of donations amid record demand

BASTROP, Texas (KXAN) — Those working to combat hunger in Central Texas are seeing a rise in food insecurity in rural areas.The Bastrop County Emergency Food Pantry has been hit hard this year, seeing a 30% increase in calls for food and support services. The pantry has served a record number of people in a six-month period.Along with the increase in demand, the pantry is also dealing with a 50% reduction in the food supply from sources like the Central Texas Food Bank."When the pandemic was going on, there was a lot of resources that were pushed out into communities to help folks during that time. Since then, those resources are no longer available," said Tresha Silva, executive director of the food pantry. Man sentenced for chasing family with knife

AMSTERDAM, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- An Amsterdam man will serve seven years in prison after chasing three people with a knife in May 2022. Anthony Ropas, 27, was convicted in March of Attempted Burglary, Menacing and Endangering the Welfare of a Child. Prosecutors said he was holding a knife when he chased a neighbor who was carrying a 2-year-old child and his girlfriend.He then tried to force his way into their apartment. Ropas was also sentenced to three years of post-release supervision.

Schenectady Police spread awareness after four overdoses reported

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Four fatal overdoses were reported in Schenectady in just the last three days. Now Lieutenant Ryan Macherone from Schenectady Police Department wants to help spread awareness to the community, especially during the holiday.“We’re always concerned with this type of situation. We knew that there was an overdose on Saturday. Valley Park budget crisis leads to emergency July 4 board meeting

VALLEY PARK, Mo. – Some Valley Park residents wondered why city hall abruptly shut down Monday. The reason behind the action was the city failed to pass a budget before July 1, the start of the current fiscal year. An emergency meeting is scheduled for 8 a.m. on Tuesday. A budget proposal was passed out of committee. It also received a majority vote in favor of adopting the budget by the eight-member board of alderman. A simple majority is not enough under Missouri law, according to Valley Park City Attorney Tim Engelmeyer.  He said five votes are needed, with the mayor being able to break a four-four tie. “We have not been able to reach that five votes because of absentees, aldermen not showing up for meetings, or abstaining,” he said. Engelmeyer said critical city services, such as trash pickups, could be affected until a deal can be approved. Pay for city employees could also be jeopardized. Residents will continue to receive access to emer...

LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. – A senior citizen in north St. Louis County contacted our You Paid For It team when she could not get the help she needed from her town officials to fix her air conditioning.Dana Woods’ central air unit went out. Multiple people were shot in Philadelphia on Monday night, according to police.A spokesperson for the Philadelphia Police Department told The Associated Press there were “multiple gunshot victims” but said no other information on their conditions was immediately available.Police spokesperson Miguel Torres told CNN a suspect was in custody and a weapon was recovered.Police spokesperson Jasmine Reilly told the network six victims were taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center and two were taken to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

Brush fire erupts in Acton; firefighters halt forward progress

Firefighters have stopped forward progress of an approximately 14-acre brush fire in Acton that was initially threatening a number of structures with animals.  Crews with the Los Angeles County Fire Department, assisted by Angeles National Forest firefighters, responded to the 3100 block of Dwight Lee Street on reports of the fire at around 5:30 p.m. The brush fire erupted behind several ranch-style properties with horses. Flames could be seen burning up the hillside, an independent news agency reported.  Water dropping helicopters were deployed to fight the blaze, along with several engines, dozers and hand crews, authorities said.  L.A.
