Johnny Escobalez started the year on the junior varsity. He finished as a state champion. In front of an energetic and boisterous crowd, Escobalez fired a complete game, scattering just five hits and surrendering a lone earned run to lift No. 2 Taunton to its third Div. 1 State title in four years with a 7-2 win over No. 1 Franklin on Sunday night at Polar Park. The state championship is Taunton’s second straight over its Hockomock Kelley-Rex rival Franklin.“Johnny is phenomenal,” Taunton coach Blair Bourque said. “Enough can’t be said about the performance, especially being a sophomore. Being on this stage is incredible. The future is really bright but this is a really special day for him.”The top of Taunton’s lineup proved relentless once again off Franklin ace Alfred Mucciarone. Braden Sullivan, Brayden Cali, and Dawson Bryce combined for eight of the Tigers’ 11 hits and five of their RBIs.“Mucciarone is the best pitcher in the ...Lance Lynn matches a Chicago White Sox record with 16 strikeouts — but they lose 5-1 to the Seattle Mariners

Lance Lynn alternated between strikes and balls in the first four pitches of his outing, facing J.P. Crawford. The Seattle Mariners shortstop fouled off the fifth pitch. Lynn then went to a changeup for a strikeout. The sequence set the tone for a record-tying day for the Chicago White Sox starter.Lynn matched the franchise record for strikeouts in a game, finishing with 16 in seven-plus innings in a 5-1 loss to the Mariners in front of 44,772 on Sunday at T-Mobile Park.“All in all my stuff was good today, but we lost,” Lynn said. “It doesn’t matter how many you strike out, you have to win the game. It was a series loss for us and we need to win as many series as we can, and today we weren’t able to do that.”The right-hander allowed three runs on four hits with two walks in seven-plus innings. The Mariners broke the game open in the eighth with a three-run triple by Jarred Kelenic against reliever Reynaldo López.Lynn’s 16 strikeouts tied ...Div. 1 girls tennis: Lexington defeats Lincoln-Sudbury, repeats as champs

CAMBRIDGE – No. 5 Lexington (24-1) moved into some rare space as the girls tennis team rolled to a 4-1 win over No. 3 Lincoln-Sudbury in the Division 1 state final at the duPont Tennis Courts on the campus of MIT.In a rematch of last year’s state final, Lexington proved to be the better team for the second season in a row and now can claim back-to-back titles for the first time in school history. The Minuteman now own three state tennis championships, with one back in 1975.No. 1 and No. 2 singles stars Diya Patchamuthu and Kyra McCandless cruised to match victories to pace the Minutemen from the start.Patchamuthu secured a 6-1, 6-1 win over Emily Naum while McCandless was one better with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Lia Swire for straight set victories as the sophomore tandem set things up nicely for Lexington head coach Chance Fechtor.“Very dominant and like you saw, (McCandless) barely gives up games and they are both anchors for the team,” said Fechtor. “Realistically, everyone has to pul...Blinken opens second day of talks in Beijing on mission to ease soaring US-China tensions

BEIJING (AP) — U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has opened a second and final day of critical meetings with senior Chinese officials as the two sides expressed willingness to talk but showed little inclination to bend on hardened positions that have sent tensions soaring. Blinken was meeting Monday morning with China’s top diplomat Wang Yi and an encounter with President Xi Jinping was still in the cards before he departs in the late evening. Neither Blinken nor Wang made any comment to reporters as they greeted each other and sat for their discussion. In the first round of talks on Sunday, Blinken met for nearly six hours with Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang after which both countries said they had agreed to continue high-level discussions. However, there was no sign that any of the most fractious issues between them were closer to resolution. The two sides both said Qin had accepted an invitation from Blinken to visit Washington but Beijing made clear that “the China-U.S. re...2 dead and 3 hurt after shooting at Washington state electronic dance music festival
