The first test of the Chicago Cubs starting pitching depth has arrived.Jameson Taillon, who was scheduled to start Thursday at Wrigley Field, was placed on the 15-day injured list with a left groin strain.The move was retroactive to Monday, and the Cubs believe the right-hander will be ready to return soon after he is eligible. The Cubs called up Javier Assad from Triple-A Iowa to take Taillon’s place in the rotation, and Assad started Thursday against the Los Angeles Dodgers.“Last year we didn’t have enough depth to withstand that,” team President Jed Hoyer said of Taillon’s injury. “Hopefully this year we have guys like Javy, and hopefully Kyle (Hendricks) comes back soon. CARLSBAD, Calif. — All northbound lanes on a stretch of Interstate 5 in Carlsbad were closed Thursday afternoon due to police activity, after the suspect in a vandalism incident attempted to leave the scene in a rideshare.Around 11:56 a.m. Thursday, law enforcement was notified about an incident of felony vandalism against a vehicle at the 6000 block of Paseo Del Norte, according to the Carlsbad Police Department. The individual suspected of committing the vandalism reportedly left the scene in an unidentified rideshare vehicle.The rideshare with the suspect was located by police, who then attempted a traffic stop. When officers approached the vehicle, CPD said that the suspect started threatening the driver with a large knife.Carlsbad police initiated a short pursuit that led onto the northbound I-5. On Friday, it will be 5 to 10 degrees warmer than Thursday. Those temperatures expect to remain the same on Saturday as well. California to meet 100% of water requests thanks to storms

(AP) — California will provide 100% of the water requested by cities and farms for the first time in years thanks to winter storms that filled reservoirs and runoff from a record snowpack, regulators announced Thursday.The State Water Project will provide full allocations to 29 water agencies supplying about 27 million customers and 750,000 acres of farmland, the Department of Water Resources said.As late as March, the agency was only expecting to provide 75% of requested water supplies.The last time the state agency fully met water requests was in 2006.
