The first of what is expected to be many.In his second career MLB game, Anthony Volpe recorded his first major league hit on Saturday afternoon. And in typical Volpe fashion, the 21-year-old immediately swiped second base barely allowing himself any time to embrace his milestone.“Everything with the [pitch] clock now happens pretty fast,” Volpe said after the Yankees’ 7-5 loss to the Giants. “So I was just trying to focus on if there was any opportunity to steal a base and at the same time, take it all in…“It was an awesome moment. I felt like I was battling so it was good to at least get the bat on the ball and to see it go through was a bonus. It was a great moment for me in my career. MIAMI — Mark Canha made a secret tweak. He won’t reveal it, but it wasn’t anything major.“It was something that was this big,” the Mets’ outfielder said, holding up two fingers less than an inch apart. It was a small adjustment that paid big dividends. One night after the Mets had a dismal offensive showing against the Miami Marlins, they answered some questions to move to 2-1 on the season.Canha had a home run, a double, an RBI single, a walk and three runs scored and Omar Narvaez went 2-for-3 with two RBI to beat the Marlins 6-2 on Saturday at LoanDepot Park. Right-hander Tylor Megill went five innings to earn the win in place of Justin Verlander and the Mets played stellar defense behind him.“Big,” manager Buck Showalter said. “He did a lot of things well today, but Mark does every day. He’s just such a consistent human being. He’s a guy [that] when you’re going through lineups, you want to figure out a way to ...Chicago Cubs can’t capitalize on Justin Steele’s 6 shutout innings in 3-1 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers: ‘That’s as good as we’ve seen him.’

Chicago Cubs pitching coach Tommy Hottovy could tell left-hander Justin Steele was getting caught in between the timing of his delivery.Steele became out of whack in the first inning of his season debut Saturday against the Milwaukee Brewers at Wrigley Field. Hottovy saw moments when Steele moved either too slow or sped up his delivery as he searched for the adjustment in a nearly troublesome opening frame.Steele escaped the inning behind a timely double play shortstop Dansby Swanson deftly started with runners on first and second, snagging a 107.4-mph one-hopper off William Contreras’ bat. After a chat with Hottovy between innings, everything clicked for Steele.“I definitely found a rhythm,” Steele said. “Once I got going, I was in a groove and got comfortable out there.”Steele completed six shutout innings, scattering three hits, striking out eight and walking one batter. The Cubs failed to capitalize on Steele’s performance in a 3-1 loss. Steel...High winds expected to set in for San Diego mountains, deserts; NWS watch in effect
