Fighting future ‘red tides’ in San Francisco Bay

The largest sources of nutrient pollution and algae blooms in the San Francisco Bay — 37 different sewage treatment plants — are cleaning up their act.Faced with two blooms called “red tides,” deadly to marine life, officials will soon recommend the first-ever restrictions on the release of the nutrients, such as nitrogen, into the Bay, a vast body of water that has long seemed resilient to trouble.Nitrogen is not a toxin; it is necessary for a healthy ecosystem. But too much of it, discharged in wastewater from human urine, sets off a complex series of events that causes too much algae to grow, which depletes oxygen and kills marine life. Last year, a harmful bloom caused piles of stinking fish corpses to wash ashore. Ingredients:½ cup extra virgin olive oil6 Tbs. low-sodium soy sauce2 Tbs. distilled white vinegar.2 Tbs. toasted sesame oil1 Tsp. minced garlic1 Tsp. sugar3 pounds mixed tomatoes, large ones chopped, small tomatoes halved.Salt and pepper to taste.¼ cup basil, choppedMethod of Preparation:In a medium bowl, combine olive oil, soy sauce, vinegar, sesame oil, garlic and sugar. Whisk to combine.Slice or chop large tomatoes. Cut the small ones in half.  Arrange the tomatoes on a serving platter and season with salt and pepper.Drizzle with half of the dressing and top with chopped basil.  Serve with the remaining dressing on the side.Enjoy!

(CNN) — Craig Robertson, the Utah man who FBI special agents shot and killed last week while attempting to arrest him for allegedly making threats against President Joe Biden, confronted Provo police in 2018 with an AR-15, according to a report by The Salt Lake Tribune.The Salt Lake Tribune obtained police records that state on August 20, 2018, two Google Fiber employees knocked on Robertson’s door after they arrived to connect his neighbor’s internet service, and went to his backyard when the knocks went unanswered.“Robertson soon exited his backdoor, allegedly waving a handgun, and yelled for the workers to get off his property, according to the report. Researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital are revolutionizing the way doctors can detect a common heart disease. Atrial septal defect, or ASD, is a congenital heart disease and could be detected with artificial intelligence.Shinichi Goto, a doctor and researcher, said the symptoms that go along with ASD are typically mild, so the disease often goes undiagnosed. However, if not treated, ASD can cause serious problems.“You get irreversible complications such as atrial fibrillation, stroke, heart failure, and so on,” Goto said. “It’s missed in most of the cases.”Goto said the reason ASD is often undiagnosed is because screening for it is expensive.
