The goal for the Gophers men’s basketball team on Wednesday was to take the next step.It was a modest movement, but Minnesota did what they couldn’t in Ben Johnson’s first postseason a year ago: win a first-round Big Ten tournament game. The 14th-seeded Gophers overcame an ugly start to take an 11-point lead and weathered a late drought to knock off 11th-seed Nebraska 78-75 in Chicago. Minnesota will play Maryland at approximately 8 p.m. Thursday. The last-place seed in the conference tournament had lost in the opening round in four straight years since 2018, including the Gophers falling 60-51 to Penn State last year.Dawson Garcia, who was voted Big Ten honorable mention Tuesday, led Minnesota with 18 points, 13 rebounds and six assists. The Gophers (9-21) won for the second time in three games in March. Minnesota was in a similar spot Sunday vs. Wisconsin, with halftime and late-game leads but couldn’t make free throws down the stretch in another close loss. The Gophers didn’t score a...Union members authorize strike at St. Paul Public Works, Parks and Recreation, Regional Water Services

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - State control over the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department is one step closer to becoming a reality.Missouri House members passed the bill, and it is now in the hands of state senators. As HB 702 passed through the house in Jefferson City, some people in St. Louis are hoping the bill fails in the Senate."If the state takes over the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, that's reversing the will of voters," said Nick Desideri, communications director for St. Louis Mayor Tishaura Jones' office. Jamal Murray’s jam was supposed to relieve his frustration. When it rimmed out, it only exacerbated it.What was supposed to be a momentous night for Murray turned into a frustrating one as the Nuggets got pounded, 117-96, by the visiting Chicago Bulls. The loss snapped the Nuggets’ four-game winning streak, dropped them to 46-20 on the year, and stood as only the fifth home loss this season.“Just no defense,” Nuggets coach Michael Malone lamented. “… Nothing went right tonight. We didn’t play well. I didn’t coach well.”Murray, who finished just 4 for 15 from the field for 11 points, was eager to seize Denver’s all-time 3-point shooting mark. But after shooting only 1-of-7 from 3-point range, he’ll have to settle for tying Will Barton’s all-time mark of 804. The record will likely fall Friday at San Antonio. It got so bad that by the fourth quarter, a raucous “Let’s go Bulls!” chant broke out at Ball Arena. That was after visiting Chicago fans showered Zach LaVine in...Newsom tests positive for COVID-19, his office says
