Concert review: Bryan Adams brings nostalgic rush of rockers and ballads to Xcel Energy Center

We all made questionable decisions during the depths of the pandemic and in the case of Bryan Adams, it was writing a song called “Kick Ass.”The 63-year-old Canadian opened his concert Monday at St. Paul’s Xcel Energy Center with the track, which I guess is supposed to be funny. It began with a lengthy spoken-word bit from John Cleese that said after God created everything, man started making bad music, so he sent an angel (Bryan Adams) down to earth to invent rock and roll. The chorus of the song itself includes the lines “If you love some kick ass rocking music, we’re a kick ass rocking band.” (I am not making any of this up.)Adams emerged from Ontario in the ’80s and his handsome mug helped him establish a foothold in the early days of MTV, which put the likes of “Cuts Like a Knife,” “Run to You” and “Summer of ’69” into heavy rotation. Louie Varland ‘trending in the right direction’ with Saints, who beat Stripers 6-4

Trevor Larnach was the hero Monday night in the Saints’ come-from-behind 6-4 victory over the Gwinnett Stripers at CHS Field.  Louie Varland was the local hero looking to get his mojo back.Larnach’s two-run home run in the eighth inning broke a 4-4 tie as the Saints won their sixth straight. Varland, making his third start for the Saints since being sent down by the Twins on June 20, pitched five innings, allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out five.“I’m trending in the right direction,” Varland said when asked to assess his performance.Although he throws an above-average fastball that hits 96 mph, Varland pointed out that it is not regarded as a “plus” pitch. Federal drug-trafficking probe ends in Pinole man’s arrest

REDWOOD CITY – A 36-year-old Pinole man was arrested last week in Redwood City as part of a federal drug-trafficking investigation, according to authorities.The Redwood City Police Department’s Street Crime Suppression Team helped the Drug Enforcement Agency with the probe, Lt. Nick Perna said in a statement Monday.Perna said detectives stopped the man near Whipple Avenue and Highway 101 on June 28.The man had roughly two pounds of cocaine and a loaded 9mm “ghost gun,” or an unregistered privately made firearm, Perna said. Hit-and-run driver runs down man setting off fireworks in L.A.

Authorities are investigating after a possible fatal hit-and-run crash Monday night in Wilmington involving a man reportedly lighting off fireworks in the road.  Officers with the Los Angeles Police Department responded to the scene, located at 710 N. Fries Avenue, near a Food 4 Less grocery store, at around 9:10 p.m. on reports of a vehicle hitting a pedestrian, police told KTLA.  The victim, a 36-year-old man, was allegedly in the road igniting fireworks when he was struck by a sport utility vehicle.
