DC delays implementing fines for using bus lanes, extends warning period indefinitely

Drivers in D.C. will not receive hefty fines for blocking red-painted bus lanes in the city — at least, not yet.A new bus lane ticketing system was expected to be implemented on Monday, which followed a 45-day period of time during which drivers were issued warnings instead of fines.However, according to the District Department of Transportation, the warning period is being extended indefinitely.In a statement, DDOT said it “decided to push back the start of the enforcement period” while it finalizes plans with Metro.“For the time being, we will continue with the warning period and will make an announcement once we have reached a new enforcement date,” DDOT said.Bus lanes are portions of streets that are designated for the use of public transit buses, typically marked by red paint and signage.Vehicles that are allowed to use the lanes include public transit buses, tour buses, school buses, maintenance vehicles, emergency vehicles, bikes and scooters.Unauthori...

Low water levels may have lead to Potomac River accident that left kayaker dead

The death of a whitewater kayaker on the Potomac River on Sunday has drawn attention to the risks that river users face when water levels are low.Ella Mills, a third-year exchange student from Dublin and a member of Columbia University’s whitewater kayaking club, died after being pinned under a rock in a hydraulic vacuum at Little Falls on a weekend trip for students from the New York City university.The Potomac River’s water level measured 2.7 feet at the Army Corps of Engineers’ downstream gauge on Sunday when the accident occurred. Experienced kayakers say more normal water levels are usually above 3 feet and are considered high when they’re 6 to 7 feet or higher.“There’s different risks when it’s high or low. Odor in Frontier Airlines plane returns flight to Denver

DENVER (KDVR) — A Frontier Airlines flight had to return to Denver on Tuesday night because of an issue on the plane.The flight was to Raleigh, North Carolina, according to a Denver International Airport spokesperson. The spokesperson first told FOX31 it was a medical situation. They later said it was a mechanical situation. Witness: LoDo bar patrons rushed inside and locked in after shooting FOX31 confirmed through FlightAware that Frontier flight 560 returned to the Denver airport shortly after departure on Tuesday evening.The pilot can be heard reporting an odor in the cockpit, according to air traffic control recordings on LiveATC.net. The pilot said the odor was not smoke but something "indicating that we have some kind of contamination in the cabin."FlightAware shows the plane took off at 6:32 p.m. and arrived back in Denver at 7:10 p.m.FOX31 has reached out to Denver-based Frontier for more information.
