New book commemorates former Montreal neighbourhood bulldozed for Expo 67

MONTREAL — There is almost nothing to suggest that the mix of parking lots and industrial lands near Montreal’s Victoria Bridge was once a vibrant residential neighbourhood. But before it was demolished in 1964 to make way for a sports venue for the Expo 67 world fair, children played on the stoops of Victorian row houses in a small collection of streets called Goose Village, where successive waves of immigrants worked, lived and raised families. Now, the story of the neighbourhood and its people is being revived in a new book by Concordia University associate photography professor Marisa Portolese. More fruit pouches for kids are being recalled because of illnesses that are linked to lead

Federal health officials are expanding an investigation into potentially lead-tainted pouches of apple cinnamon fruit puree marketed for children amid reports of more illnesses and additional product recalls. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said Friday it has received reports of seven illnesses in at least five states possibly linked to contaminated puree. Two new companies, Schnucks Markets of St. Louis and Weis Markets of Sunbury, Pennsylvania, announced recalls of certain cinnamon applesauce products because they may contain high levels of lead. WanaBana of Coral Gables, Florida, previously recalled of all lots and expiration dates of its apple cinnamon fruit puree. Eating the contaminated products could result in “acute toxicity,” FDA officials said. CHICAGO — Chicago police are investigating after someone put anti-Semitic messages on several cars early Sunday morning in Portage Park.According to Chicago police, around 12:30 a.m., someone in the 5400 block of West Wilson Avenue put pieces of cardboard with anti-Semitic messages on them on several parked cars. 16-year-old boy, 2 others injured after shooting in Gage Park No one has been arrested yet.Area Five detectives are investigating and anyone with information should call them.

The worst part is Jaren Hall was kind of cooking.After struggling to find a rhythm on his first drive, the rookie quarterback had the Vikings in position to score a touchdown on his second drive.He completed a quick pass to tight end Johnny Mundt for 18 yards, then a deep pass to running back Alexander Mattison for 47 yards.That put the Vikings in the low red zone where Hall tried to scramble for a touchdown. He got hit hard near the goal line, slammed the back of his head into the turf, and had to be helped off the field.After briefly getting checked out in the medical tent, Hall was quickly ruled out with a concussion. Gunpoint robbery in St. Louis, near Tower Grove Park

ST. LOUIS COUNTY – Police were sent to respond to a robbery incident in the vicinity of Tower Grove Park. The victim reported being held up at gunpoint during the event on November 4, at around 8:30 p.m.The victim had arranged to meet a person he had connected with on Instagram. While they were walking through the pathways in Tower Grove Park, a group of suspects appeared, holding a firearm. They confronted the victim, forced him to accompany them to his vehicle, and explicitly stated their intention to make him withdraw money from an ATM.The suspects instructed the victim to sit in the passenger seat of his vehicle, with one suspect positioned behind him while another attempted to operate the driver's seat. However, their attempt to drive the vehicle was unsuccessful, as it had a manual transmission. Consequently, the suspects fled.The investigation into this incident is currently ongoing.

The National Weather Service reported that light rain had begun falling in the North Bay Sunday morning, with chances of rain spreading throughout the Bay Area in the afternoon and evening and continuing through Monday.The rain is due to a pair of cold fronts that are moving into the Bay Area, which will lead to clear skies and cold mornings in the middle of the week and the possibility of rain returning by the end of the week, forecasters also said. Rain falling Sunday and Monday is expected to be scattered and “beneficial,” the National Weather Service said.
